Prof Crawford: Of course, the percutaneous valve results presented this morning were most interesting to me. I am a general cardiologist and see a lot of patients with valve disease and constantly discussing the options with patients when they have severe aortic stenosis. To see this trial, which was a randomized comparison of surgery versus the percutaneous valve in patients who were high risk but candidates for surgery (not so high a risk that they weren’t surgical candidates), and its results could potentially change the whole way we practice cardiology. The trial showed that the percutaneous valve was not inferior to surgery at a one year endpoint.
